1. Know the temperature
Get in the habit of paying attention to the thermostat on your water
heater. A safe setting for your water heater maintenance is 120 degrees
F, which prevents tank damage and allows you to save on losses of
standby and demand heat. Many manufacturers set the temperature to 140
degrees F by default, which is hotter than most families actually need.
In fact, elevated temperatures may even cause scalding and accelerate
corrosion and mineral buildup in your home’s pipes.
2. Test the pressure relief valve
We suggest testing the pressure relief valve on your water heater once a
season or so. This is a great opportunity to both clear debris and
check the pressure. When you raise and lower the test lever, the
pressure relief valve should release a burst of hot water into the
drainpipe. If it doesn’t let out a burst, call Griffin’s friendly Lompoc
plumbers to get a new water heater installed straight away.
3. Drain the tank on a consistent basis
It’s a good idea to flush out about one-quarter of the tank in your
water heater a few times a year. Here’s how: turn off the cold water
supply, hook up a garden hose to the drain valve, and then run the water
until it looks clear. Draining will help clear away sediment and
preserve the heating efficiency of the water heater. Intimidated with
this process? Not to fear, Griffin is here! Our experienced Lompoc
plumbers are prepared to help maintain your water heater all year long.
